Thoughts on the upcoming patch

Postby cheeky » Sat Apr 19, 2014 10:39 pm

First, I'd like to say I'm happy to see that the boards are back. Hooray for public discussion.

I have a great deal of concern about the impact that Level Drain is going to have, not just on my characters (which is obviously going to be very bad), but also on the direction the game is going in, and what community we have.

My main concern is that it is scaled to be more punishing to older players. It is easy to gain many levels an hour the first few days of play. A small chance to lose levels at this point is a mild inconvenience at the worst. For an older player, who may be only able to increase skills through TMs, a loss of skill levels would be demoralising.

I'd rather not see a system added to the game that discourages players, especially older players, from exploring, taking risks, or generally trying to experience the game.

Edit: Additional queries:
Is prayer going to count for level drain?

Is there a cap on the number of levels you can lose in a single drain?

Ugh. I was really enjoying the game and the survival mechanics. I was playing a lot in a short time.

Then a rotter hit me with an unblockable attack which drained 3 levels of my best offensive skill just like that. While at this level I could make it back with an hour or so of work, this is horrible and will make later levels of skills a path in frustration. This mechanic just isn't fun in any way. Oh it is horror themed alright. Horror at time wasted grinding skills to have them taken away by an undodgable attack. Sorry about the whinging but this mechanic makes a game which I was really excited about untenable to play, personally.

There was a reason level drain was taken out of D and D. Players didn't want to play characters that got drained by one attack that undid their hard work.

EDIT: I don't mind death having skill deterioration so much but those numbers before seem a bit extreme.

The level drain of zombies looks a bit less bad than death, I got hit once by a jackalhide.

Mon Jun 2 20:14:22 2014: subterfuge.theft.person adjusted by -3 [unknown source].

I didn't stay long enough to actually battle the zombie, but I wonder if getting repeatedly hit keeps on making you lose levels. In which case it's actually worse than death. :p

I think I read somewhere that there's a 10 minute period between getting drained.

The lower level NPCs with level-drain capabilities should be a bit more forgiving (jackalhides, rotters) with the amount of levels they drain, and across the board the level drain NPCs should be a bit easier to defend against than before.

These changes weren't reflected in patch notes.
